Tidgh and his brother Naoise once lived in the village near Kells Castle. They were both blacksmiths, hardworking and prosperous, and were greatly respected by their fellow villagers. The brothers didn’t believe in the spirits of the Otherworld, which came back to haunt them on an eve of Samhain long ago. After a hard day’s work, Tidgh headed home, with Naoise promising to follow shortly. As Tidgh headed down a path alone, he heard strange noises around him, followed by a scream from the forge. He ran back to the forge, to see spirits from the Otherworld lifting Naoise into the air. Tidgh tried to stop them, but they carried Naoise away, leaving Tidgh, who was transformed into a tree that still stands in the village to this day.
